At Paul’s Place, every member finds their own way to belong, for Matt, that place is on the wheelchair rugby court.

“I do wheelchair rugby,” he says. “I felt like everyone with a disability was outnumbered. Now I’m included. Always smiling.”

Matt’s words capture the power of inclusion. Sports can be more than just games, they are communities where people build confidence, teamwork, and friendships. Before finding that sense of belonging, Matt felt isolated, as though his voice and presence were overshadowed. Now, participation has given him a sense of equality and connection.

Being part of a team has not only strengthened Matt physically but emotionally too. Feeling included and valued allows him to face life with positivity, resilience, and, as he puts it, a smile that reflects genuine happiness.

Matt’s experience highlights an essential truth: inclusion transforms lives. Whether through sport, social activities, or community support, being seen and welcomed matters. It’s about creating spaces where people with disabilities are not just present, but fully part of the experience.

At Paul’s Place, stories like Matt’s show how opportunities for engagement and empowerment can change perspectives, foster confidence, and bring joy to everyday life.

Overcoming Fear:

At Paul’s Place, members often face challenges that go beyond the visible, and for Matt, one of those challenges was getting back into the swimming pool.

“I broke the fear and got back into the swimming pool. You wouldn’t think I was afraid of it. It was heaven,” he says.

Swimming had once been intimidating for Matt, but facing that fear became a moment of triumph. The pool offered more than exercise, it provided freedom, joy, and a sense of achievement. That feeling of “heaven” reflects how important it is for people to reclaim experiences they might have once felt unable to enjoy.

Matt’s story highlights the power of courage, support, and taking small steps toward personal goals. Overcoming fear does not always make headlines, but for individuals like Matt, it transforms confidence and wellbeing.

At Paul’s Place, members are encouraged to explore new activities, confront challenges safely, and rediscover experiences that bring happiness. Matt’s return to swimming is a reminder that growth often comes from confronting fears, and the rewards can be profoundly uplifting.
